The Old Goal was constructed in 1880 by James Gibbs with the Police Quarters being constructed in 1907.  Both buildings are constructed from brick and iron and are typical of government buildings of the period.  Constable John Bovell was the first policeman to occupy the quarters.

The original building consisted of two cells, a storeroom, kitchen, exercise yard, office, two lobbies, and two police living rooms. The gaol was used until 10th April 1970.  In the mid 1980's the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes acquired the buildings and the quarters were renovated and added to, to provide accommodation for staff.  The building has local historic significance and is on the Shire's Municipal Inventory.

You can view the inside of the gaol every Saturday 10 am to 2 pm when a Bridgetown Historical Society volunteer will be able to answer your questions.  If you have a group that wishes to view the Old Gaol mid week please contact the Visitor Centre in advance on 9761 1740 and they will try and arrange for a Historical Society volunteer to show you through.
